TransActual to host Meet Us, Hear Us event for UK politicians

Wednesday 13 November

For immediate release

For the best part of ten years, trans people in the UK have been talked about, discussed, and pigeon-holed by politicians and the media. Rarely are we included. When we are, it is as likely we will be misrepresented and belittled as our concerns are glossed over and dismissed.

That is why we have put together Meet Us, Hear Us which will take place in parliament on Wednesday November 13, the first day of Trans Awareness Week.

According to jane fae, a director of TransActual: “This event has one simple aim. That is to make sure every elected representative has the chance to meet a trans person and hear about the issues that impact us day in, day out.”

In support of this, TransActual is providing trans folk information on how to arrange a meeting with an MP or other elected representative; and what to do when they get there. There are briefing packs – and also workshops to give people the confidence to engage in this way.

TransActual has also arranged a drop in for MPs where we will be answering questions, and also handing out a free copy of Transitions: The Unheard Stories, by jane fae.

jane concludes: “even when cis people claim to be allies, they are rarely listening. One only has to look at how politicians have tinkered with the Gender Recognition Act – as opposed to doing something more desperately needed, like fixing trans healthcare. The former was first pushed by Theresa May, taken up by the SNP, and is now back on the agenda following remarks from Keir Starmer.

“Arguably, in every instance, the proposal emerged from narrow political calculation; an attempt to look LGBTQ+ friendly, without delivering much of substance. In the case of the latest wheeze, from Starmer, this idea has been mooted with zero input from key trans bodies.

“It is past time that this stopped.

“It is past time that MP’s began to hear us!”
