A significant new report from TransActual, Trans Lives 2025: Continuing To Endure The Hostile Environment, reiterates that rising anti-trans hatred is creating a hostile environment for trans people in the UK.
Major barriers to accessing healthcare and appropriate ID represent a failure of this Government to respect the fundamental rights of trans people.
In a UK survey of over 4,000 trans people, TransActual found that 99% say media coverage has harmed their mental health, 99% have heard politicians express transphobic views, and many have been refused non-transition healthcare simply for being trans.
- 64% of respondents reported having avoided going to the GP, even if unwell
- 56% of respondents felt more unsafe because their ID does not reflect their gender identity
- 40% of respondents would like access to an ID that doesn’t list their gender
- One in four trans people report being made homeless during their life
The survey for the Trans Lives report was carried out in December 2024 and January 2025.
The research was led by Freddy Sperring and Dr Trent Grassian and covers access to ID, access to healthcare, and experiences and impacts of transphobia.
