Time to call out the anti-trans pile-ons

Many of you will be aware of the horrendous pile-on over the last few days, directed towards Olympic boxer Imane Khelif. Racist, transphobic and misogynist. For a fuller account of what has been going on, read jane fae’s piece about what happened.

If you are as disgusted by this as we are, you can help by making your voice heard. Write to the newspapers. Write to local sports groups. Above all, write to your local MP.

Dear [MP’s Name],

My name is [your name] and I am writing to you today as a resident in your constituency.

Words matter. There is no single explanation for the violent disorder following the horrific events in Southport. However, it seems likely that incendiary posts on social media spreading disinformation played a large part. I  hope that you would roundly condemn any member of your party who contributed to that disinformation.

In the same week, we have seen awful speculation as to the gender of Olympic boxer, Imane Khelif.

To be clear: there is zero evidence in the public domain that Khelif is any other than who she says she is: a cis woman born and raised in Algeria – a country not best known for its tolerance of LGBTQ+ people.

All that is known, in fact, is that after years of competing without any issues as a woman, last year she fell foul of what appears to be a highly political action by the Russian-led, discredited IBA.

This is important because, even though Khelif retains the support of the official sports body in Algeria and the IOC, she has now been turned into a target of hate for anyone who believes in their God-given right to be a vigilante – every hater, transphobe, misogynist, incel, not to mention islamophobe and racist, with an axe to grind.

This has, in a very real sense, put Khelif at risk of violence, of being killed.

I am sure you would not want your party associated with such an outcome. For that reason I am asking for your support to ensure that any individual who has publicly spread disinformation about Khelif now publicly retracts it, and makes a full and public apology for their effective incitement of Violence Against Women.

I would also ask for your support for all gender diverse people in the UK, including trans, non-binary and intersex people, who now feel more afraid as result of this high profile social media campaign.

Yours faithfully,

[Your name]

Last but by no means least, if you receive any response from your MP, let us know by emailing policy@transactual.org.uk.
